Wrong Market???

I did the craft show this weekend. Sat. is poured, but Sunday it was nice. I didn't do well at all. We were in a small town and there were maybe 15 vendors. The ones that did well were the flea market people. The vendors (like myself) that made their own jewelry, etc. Didn't fare well. I was discouraged and thought if I heard one more person tell me "how cute and nice" my things were (without buying) I was going to cry. I really didn't feel I had overpriced anything. I am going to try one more on labor day. This show is strickly handcrafted items. They don't allow flea market items or stuff bought and you resell. So maybe that will be a better venue. I haven't given up, yet.

  1. I'm so sorry to hear the craft show didn't go well for you. I don't have any suggestions to offer, but I do hope the Labor Day show goes a lot better for you.

  2. Connie, I did this a long time ago. Flea Market people do not want to pay for handcrafted items. If the next one you are doing is a true craft show, you will do much better. Keep your chin up! There are people out there who really like handcrafted items and they will find you.

  3. I hate that you were so disappointed, but the next show sounds like it will be better for you. You really laid a guilt trip on me! I was reminded of all the times I've said those same words to vendors, and walked on. I must confess I never thought about how it made them feel. That's not very nice, is it? ---"Love"

  4. I'm so sorry the show didn't go well. Hopefully the show with strictly handcrafted item will be a better fit, with customers who are looking for handcrafted loveliness. Good luck! -Joanne

  5. I think the next show sounds like a better fit for your lovely handcrafted items. I agree that when therfe is a flea market, it negatively impacts handcrafted items.
Sorry it wasn't a good experience for you, but I am glad youy are going to try again because you have great stuff!!!

  7. Don't be discouraged Connie, you just need to find the right crowd. It's a tough gig when you are up against flea market goods. More discerning buyers will be more appreciative of quality items. Ann :-)

  8. I agree with Ann. It is the market more than anything! It is hard to try again, but you will be better at choosing the right market. You learn as you go I am afraid. Not fun.

  9. Connie,

I'm glad to hear you haven't given up! I recall one weekend, I made enough on the Saturday to pay for my booth, and sold absolutely nothing the next day.

I know it's hard, when people say that, but if perhaps the "live" by Thumper's Daddy's words of wisdom "If you can't say nothin' nice, don't say nothin' at all". Be glad they appreciated your work. What used to bug me.. "Oh, I can make that", or "I can get that at so & so's".

They have seen your product, and will remember the next time they see you. Do try to go back to the fairs that work for you. Even if it is just interest!
